Crown Prince of Fujairah joins hand with Taekwondo for refugees

The crown prince of Fujairah, one of seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has joined hands with taekwondo charity programs for refugees.

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) said Monday His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Sharqi, the crown prince of Fujairah, donated $100,000 to the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) during the fifth Fujairah Open Taekwondo Championships Feb. 23.

The prince made his donation at the opening of the three-day championship, which attracted 589 taekwondo athletes from 35 countries.

“The growth of refugee numbers globally is one of the greatest crises facing humanity today,” the prince said through the WTF statement. “I make this donation because taekwondo is an economical, easy-to-deploy tool that delivers self-discipline, self-defense and self-confidence to refugees, so effectively upgrading their lifestyles.”

Saying the money will be transparently used to create sustainable programs to benefit refugee children worldwide, the WTF President Choue Chung-won expressed his gratitude to the prince. “I want to offer my deepest thanks to His Highness both for his tireless support of taekwondo in the UAE, and most especially, for this unexpected and extremely generous donation,” said Choue.

Choue drew up a plan to establish the humanitarian foundation in 2015 to teach taekwondo and related educational programs to refugees, especially children in refugee camps around the world. The foundation was established in Lausanne, Switzerland, last April.

The WTF and its associated charity initiative THF have been running taekwondo academies in the Azraq Camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan, and for the people displaced by earthquakes in Nepal. This year, the two organizations plan to build a taekwondo training facility at the Azraq Camp.
