Dominican Republic Open 2019 (G-1): Mexico sets the standard with 9 titles

Mexico performed at its best level in Santo Domingo last weekend and finished the 2019 edition of the Dominican Republic International Taekwondo Open at the top of the medal standings with 9 gold medals. Dominican Republic and USA were the other countries to taste glory more than once with 2 titles each, while Canada, Guatemala and Brazil grabbed 1 gold each to complete the 16 Senior divisions in competition.

The Mexican fighters who managed to reign in Santo Domingo from Saturday to Sunday were: Brenda Costa Rica, who proved to be the best in Women’s -46 kg after beating the local idol, Lara, by 34-22 in the final match; Fabiola Guadalupe Villegas Machorro, who reigned in Women’s -53 kg after getting rid of Talisca Reis from Brazil from 13-7 in the gold medal fight; Felix Anel, who left no chance for the rest of contenders in Men’s -63 kg to taste gold after edging Alvarez from Colombia by a close 11-8 in the crucial clash of the draw; Brandon Plaza, who defeated Damian Villa from USA in the last match of the Men’s -58 kg draw by a clear 30-14; Briseida Acosta, who climbed to the top of the Women’s +73 kg after outscoring Rodriguez from Dominican Republic by 11-8; Victoria Tamez, who shone over the rest of competitors in the Women’s -67 kg class after managing to beat Dumar from Colombia by a tight 3-2 result; Rene Lizarraga, who tasted glory in Men’s -74 kg after defeating Samotshodzoe from Botswana by a clear 23-4; Carlos Navarro, who proved to be one of the best athletes worldwide after defeating the local hope of the draw, Luisito Pie, by 13-9; and Bryan Salazar, who became the new Men’s -87 kg champion after outscoring Martins from Brazil by 8-6.
