1st African Para-Taekwondo Championships postponed
WTF Para-Taekwondo announced yesterdat that the 1st African Para-Taekwondo Championships has been postponed. The competition was originally scheduled to get underway on April 9 in Algiers, Algeria, but it won’t finally take place in that period. The Federation is planning to announce a new date for the event soon.
Two days ago, exactly last Monday March 23rd, WTF Para-Taekwondo said registration for the event was still open, and reminded people that classification would be available until the day before competition got underway. But as of February of this year, only five African competitors appeared on WTF Para-Taekwondo’s classification list. There were two competitors from Ghana (Sharon Akwei and John Badu) and three athltes from Morocco (Faycal Lahssaini, Abdennour Elfedainy and Mohamed Lamniai). No competitors from the host country, Algeria, were present on the list.
The event was expected to be the second event ever all around the world in which official ranking points on WTF Para-Taekwondo’s standings would be awarded. Only the recently held Canada Para-Taekwondo Open (February this year) was prior to the Algerian competition. The WTF Para-Taekwondo ranking points system has been developed with the intention to determine which athletes will be qualified for the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan.
