Morocco and Tunisia took 3 tickets each for the Rio 2016 Olympic Torunament after their athletes won 4 golds and 2 silvers during last weekend at the African Qualification Tournament for the event, which was held in the Moroccan city of Agadir. Ivory Coast and Egypt grabbed 2 places each after reaching three times the top of the podium and also taking one silver, while the remaining 6 tickets were awarded to Libya, Niger, Cape Verde, Congo, Mali and Senegal.
Thus, a total of 10 different countries obtained at least a berth in the next Olympics after 84 athletes from 29 countries, 49 males and 35 females, competed at the Inbiaat Sport Venue for the eight categories in dispute.
Cape Verde and D. R. Congo assured their first participation ever in Taekwondo at an Olympic stage.
The main names of the two most succesful nations, Morocco and Tunisia, were Hakima El-Meslahy (MOR), who won the gold medal in the Women’s -57 kg division after beating Ben Ali from Tunisia in the final by superiority; Oussama Oueslati (TUN), who dominated in the Men’s -80 kg category after defeating Coulibaly from Mali in the crucial fight by 2-0; Omar Hajjami (MOR), who climbed to the top of the Men’s -58 kg podium after getting rid of Shriha from Libya by 6-3 in the gold medal match and Yassine Trabelsi (TUN), who proved to be the strongest in the Men’s -80 kg draw after edging Issoufou from Niger in the final by 1-0.
The other two places for these two countries were earned by Ben Ali (TUN), who fimished second in the Female’s -57 kg division after losing to El-Meslah from Morocco, as said before, and Dislam (MOR), who couldn’t contain Mamina Kone from Ivory Coast in the Women’s +67 kg final, losing by 1-0.
