Aruba focuses Taekwondo's worldwide attention

The city of Santa Cruz, located in Aruba, an Island in the southern Caribbean Sea (27 km north of Venezuela and 130 km east of Colombia), will host the 2012 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships between next Thursday 22nd of November and Sunday the 25th.
This third edition of the event after Azerbaijan 2009 and China 2010, hopes to have a total of 32 national teams competing for the Male’s and Female’s world titles. The competition format will divide the 16 contestants of each category (Male’s between 68 and 80 kg, and Female’s between 49 and 62 kg) into 4 groups of 4. The teams will be given 3 points for every combat won and 1 point for every draw, with the 2 top teams of each group going through the quarter finals. In the knock out stage, the combats will be decided by a golden point in the extra round in case of draw. For the time being, a total of 11 teams in the Male’s category and 10 in the Female’s one have confirmed their presence in Aruba 2012. In case the expected number of contestants (32) is not reached, the groups configuration would be modified to fit every nation in.
TK-5 and Daedo’s PSS
Aruba 2012 will be the first edition of the WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships to follow the TK-5 competition system. Moreover, this year’s event will be the first WTF competition around the world in which the latest software version of the Daedo PSS, exclusively designed for TK-5 contests, will be used. A previous version of it was successfully tested in Taebaek (Korea) last September.
The TK-5 system will enable the national coaches of the 16 best ranked nations of each category select 5 starters and a maximum of 5 substitutes to make up their teams, with them being able to use only one sub for each fight in case of injury. This reserve selection must be made before the start of the matches, which will be divided into 2 rounds of 5 minutes with a 1 minute break in between.
The first round of them will follow the traditional team match system, with each of the athletes fighting against their rivals for 1 minute in the previously arranged order. The points won by each nation in this period will be the total sum of the points awarded to each of their fighters. The second round will be a different story as the national coaches will have the possibility to replace the athletes without having to follow any order or time specifications, with the only rule being that the fighter must have attacked a minimum of 3 times before being substituted. The team that will accumulate more points in the aggregate of both rounds will be the winner.
Other specifications of the system state that:
– The team that manages to accumulate 50 points will automatically be the winner of the combat.
– The team that accumulates 10 “Gam-jeom” will lose the fight.
– When a 30 point difference between the teams is reached during a combat, the fight will automatically finish.
