Chelyabinsk 2015 World Champs – Day 1: Eight different countries secure a medal

Belgium, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Iran, Russia, Thailand and Ukraine secured a medal on the first day of competition at Chelyabinsk 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Championships, which started today at the Traktor Arena of the Russian city.
These eight countries managed to place one athlete each into the Semi-finals of the Women’s -46 kg and Men’s -58 kg categories, which will both be resolved during tomorrow’s evening session.
The competitors who will fight for the gold medals on the second day of action will be:
Men’s -58 kg
– Farzan Ashour Zadeh Fallah (IRI), current number 1 in the WTF ranking
– Ruslan Poiseev (RUS)
– Shuai Zhao (CHN)
– Si Mohamed Ketbi (WTF), from Belgium butwho competes under the WTF flag after his Federation violated ETU statutes
Ashour will face Poiseev for a place in the big final, as Zhao and Ketbi will fight each other for the other. The Men’s -58 kg WTF ranking leader showed his dominance in the division after successfuly beating Toktomatov (KGZ), Peralta (ECU), Klompong (THA) and Navarro (MEX) by a comfortable point difference (17-3, 14-6, 11-1 and 9-2), while Poiseev had to defeat Calland (GBR, disquaification), Agojo (PHI), Tadjou (CIV) and Guzman (ARG) to make his way to the Semis. On the other side of the draw, Zhao got rid of Zaher (AFG), Nguyen (VIE), Khalil (AUS) and Mammadov (AZE), while Ketbi left Ballo (MLI), Nikitsenka (BLR), Oviedo (CRC) and Tuncat (GER) on his way to certify a medal in the category.
Women’s -46 kg
– Iryna Romoldanova (UKR)
– Wan-Ting Lin (TPE)
– Iris Tang Sing (BRA)
– Panipak Wongpattanakit (THA)
Romoldanova proved to be stronger than Lam (HKG), Truong (VIE), and Kouttouki (CYP) to secure at least a bronze medal for Ukraine; Lin showed her power over Matsui (JPN), Yildiz (TUR) and Smirnova (RUS); Tang Sing beat Lipcsei (HUN), Sim (KOR) and Li (CHN); while Wongpattanakit’s superb performance on monday left Bermejo (PHI), Farhani (TUN) and Samdansuren (MGL) behind her.
Tomorrow will be the day for the Semi-finals and Finals of these two divisions and for the beginning of the Women’s -49 kg and Men’s -74 kg categories, which will complete their draw until the Semi-final round as it happened today.
