Issoufou: “I want to keep making history”
Nigerien star, reigning world champion, will try to emulate his idol Modibo (Mali) and win the double crown in Manchester
How are you few hours away from your debut in the event?
I feel good, I was looking forward to coming back to the World Championships to keep making history in this sport here in Manchester.
Did you prepare yourself in a special way for the World Championships?
Yes, I did, because this is a big target for me, to become double champion as my idol Modibo. He made it in 2007 and 2009, so if I want to do that I have to win in 2017 and 2019, this is my big target.
What do you expect from African players here in Manchester?
I think everyone is going to see big surprises from African fighters because we have a lot of talent in our continent: Cheick Cissé (CIV), Anthony Obame (GAB), Egyptian players…
Do you have a defined strategy for the competition?
I use a special strategy for each fight, but I prefer to keep the details of this for myself and you will see it on Sunday.
What do you think of the Manchester Arena?
I like everything, I like the Arena, I like the city and the organization is perfect.
Do you have any player in mind as the biggest threat of your draw?
This is the world championship, everyone here is the best in his country, the country selected him to represent all the people, so every player in my category is really dangerous. I am not here thinking I am going to have an easy way to the medals because I am the world champion, not at all.
What would it mean to you to become Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020?
This is the dream of all Nigerien, to participate in the Olympics and win the gold medal for my country, Niger.
