A series of important changes have been announced by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) after its Extraordinary Council meeting, held yesterday in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. The most relevant decision made by the organization’s core is the departure of the Secretary General of the organization, the Swiss Jean-Marie Ayer.
WTF President Chungwon Choue said that this was certainly a “difficult decision” to make, but the Council had no other option but to take it after verifying that a series of “administrative inefficiencies” caused by the distance between the headquarters in Seoul and Ayer’s residence in Lausanne, Switzerland, had been producing recently.
Now the WTF needs to react rapidly and with effectiveness, as Ayer’s departure represents a significant change in the internal structure of the organization.
Choue told this to the 25 attendants to the Council, claiming as well that the WTF office in Lausanne would keep its doors open despite of the crucial changes suffered by Federation’s main building outside South Korea.
Dr Choue took the occasion to present the key points of the Olympic Agenda for Tokyo 2020, which was unanimously approved by the IOC during its Session in Monte Carlo in December 2014.
“We are now in a position to drive change ourselves rather than being driven,” he commented.
Choue said that the WTF needs to turn our sport into a more marketable and accessible product for all potential fans around the world.
Since the WTF opened its international office in Lausanne back in 2009, its main goal has been to make Teakwondo a global and fair sport , as these points seemed to be the key for keeping the Olympic status, which was recently extended until the 2020 Games.
New competition rules and Ranking formats were also approved during the meeting, as well as changes to the Para-taekwondo and deaf-taekwondo classification rules and regulations.
Another important decision made during this Extraordinary Council was to remove Doha as the second stage of the 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Grand Prix, which will finally be held in the Turkish city of Samsun.
The next WTF Council meeting is scheduled for the 10th of May in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on occasion of the 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Championships.
