Korea Open 2012 kicks off in Gyeongju

The 7th Korea International Open kicked off today with the participation of 2190 athletes belonging to 293 teams from 43 different countries.
This Open is a WTF G-2 event, where WTF competition rules are applied, although a new size of competition area will be tested (octagonal area which is currently used in Korean competitions).
During the first day, senior athletes from -58kg (male) and -49kg (female) categories competed for the 20 ranking points.
In the men’s -58kg category, Yamada Yuma from Japan got the gold medal as he beat Korean Myung-Je Kang in the final match (6-4) and in the female’s -49kg category Korean Hye-Jung Kim won over Jessie Bates from the USA (9-4).
In the Male’s -54 kg draw, the Japanese Takaya Takagawa climbed to the top of the podium after beating Byambasuren Byambaa from Mongolia in the final. The bronze medals were awarded to Ming Hoi Au from Honkg Kong and Pinyoporn Veerayut from Thailand. The last Senior modality of the opening session was the -46 kg Female’s, which was won by the Mongolian Munguntsetseg Serdamba thanks to her victory against Mei Feng Chan from Honduras in the big final.
At the opening ceremony, the mayor of Gyeongju said that “thanks to the agreement we have signed with the KTA for hosting the Korea Open until 2016, I am sure that Gyeongju will clearly develop as an international Taekwondo city”.
Gyeongju was the capital of Shilla, one of the ancient kingdoms of the Korean peninsula, and was the birthplace of the Hwarang warriors. Gyeongju is also well known for the Shilla archaeological and cultural sites which have been designated World Heritage sites by the UNESCO.
