Seniors – Report
Azerbaijan and Turkey ended up on top of the medal count at Luxembourg Open 2016, which was held last weekend in the capital of the country, after grabbing 3 Senior titles each. Russia managed to take 2 gold medals, while Ireland, Cuba, Hungary, Italy, France, Israel, Belgium and Great Britain clinched 1 title each to complete the 16 divisions in competition.
Azerbaijan’s success in Luxembourg was built on the performances of: Mahammad Mammadov, who reigned in Men’s -63 kg after beating Guzman from Argentina in the big final by 3-0; Aykhan Taghizade, who proved to be the strongest competitor in Men’s -68 kg after getting rid of Turkish Akyol in the gold medal match of the category by a close 2-1; and Milad Beigi Harchegani, who dominated the Men’s -80 kg division after clearly defeating Croatian Horvat in the crucial fight by 13-1.
For Turkey, the main athletes of the event were no others than Ipek Cidem, who shone over the rest of contestants in the Women’s -49 kg category after edging Lucija Zaninovic from Croatia in the last match of the draw by withdrawal; Durdane Altunel, who smashed Tarvida from Latvia 14-2 to become the new Women’s-53 kg champion; and Berkcan Sungu, who defeated Guliyev from Russia in the Men’s -74 kg final by a close 8-7 to climb to the top of the podium.
