Manchester 2019 WC – Day 1: Draws available!
Men’s -58 and Women’s -46 and -73 kg divisions will compete on the mats at Manchester Arena in the opening day of the event
Manchester 2019 World Taekwondo Championships are hours away from kick off (Wednesday May 15th 9:30 am local time) and the draws of the first day of action are already out.
Men’s -58 kg and Women’s -46 and -73 kg athletes will be the first ones to use the brand new mats at Manchester Arena, the official venue of the event, which is already set for the fights to begin tomorrow.
In Men’s -58 kg, Jesus Tortosa from Spain and Mikhail Artamonov from Russia are the two first seeded fighters, each of them starting his journey to the gold medal from the opposite spots of the draw. They have received a bye for the first round and will begin their competition in the last 32 round. Lucas Guzman from Argentina and Jack Woolley from Ireland seem to be the toughest opponents for the Russian in his quarter, while Rui Bragança from Portugal could also be a hard one for the Spaniard in order to reach the semifinals. Jun Jang from Korea, Tawin Hanprab from Thailand and the local hope of the category, Hassan Haider (GBR) are already in the last 32 round as well.
In Women’s -46 kg, world number 1 Yvette Yong (Canada) and world number 2 Kyriaki Kouttouki (Cyprus) have also been placed in the opposite ends of the bracket and appear to be the main favourites to grab the gold medal in the finweight class. Romoldanova (Ukraine), Pouryounes Langeroudi (WT refugee athlete) and Andrea Ramirez (Colombia) are also contenders for the medals.
In Women’s -73 kg, Milica Mandic (Serbia) and Maria Espinoza, two of the best athletes in the history of the division, are the only fighters of the draw who have already qualified for the round of 32, while other stars of the category such as Nafia Kus (TUR), Gorman-Shore (USA), Oogink (NED) and Da-bin Lee (KOR) will try to win the title by starting from the last 64 round.
