Milan to host European Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020
World Taekwondo has confirmed the European Taekwondo qualification tournament for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place in Milan, Italy.
The event will be held from April 24 to April 26 in a venue still to be defined in the Italian city.
Athletes aiming a for a ticket to the Olympic Games will compete between April 24 and 25, while Para-Taekwondo competitors will be in action on April 26. Para-Taekwondo will make its debut in the Olympics at Tokyo 2020, which is considered as one of the biggest successes achieved by the governing body of our sport since its foundation.
The event will determine which fighter from the old continent, apart from the already qualified through the Olympic Rankings and Grand Slam Series, earn a place in the main Olympic event, which will be held in Tokyo between July 25 to 28 next year at Makuhari Messe Hall A.
A total of 72 athletes (36 male and 36 female) will be qualified for the Olympic Games through the five (5) Continental Qualification Tournaments. Only NOCs which have qualified less than two (2) athletes per gender through the WT Olympic Ranking or WT Grand Slam Champions Series can participate in the Continental Qualification Tournaments.
If an NOC has qualified two (2) (or more) men and two (2) (or more) female athletes through the WT Olympic Ranking or WT Grand Slam Champions Series, it cannot participate in Continental Qualification Tournament unless it relinquishes quota places obtained through the WT Olympic Ranking or WT Grand Slam Champions Series in the respective gender.
