Muju 2017 World Champs – Day 1: Korea and Thailand secure 2 medals each
Korea (2), Thailand (2), Italy, Vietnam, Iran and Colombia secured a medal on the first day of competition at Muju 2017 WTF World Taekwondo Championships, which started today at the Taekwondowon Arena of the Korean city.
Korea and Thailand managed to place two athletes each into the Semi-finals of the Women’s -46 kg and Men’s -54 kg categories, which will both be resolved during tomorrow’s evening session, while Italy, Vietnam, Iran and Colombia placed 1 fighter each in the Semi-final’s stage.
The competitors who will fight for the gold medals on the second day of action will be:
Men’s -54 kg
– Tae-Hun Kim (KOR)
– Ramnarong Sawekwiharee (THA)
– Vito Dell’Aquila (ITA)
– Armin Hadipour (IRI)
Kim will face Dell’Aquila for a place in the big final, as Charanawat and Hadipour will fight each other for the other. Kim, double world champion in Puebla 2013 and Chelyabinsk 2015, showed his dominance in the division after successfuly beating Molaodi (BOT) by 15-2, Matsui (JPN) by 29-3, Haider (GBR) by 28-3 and Dagdelen (TUR) by 27-7, all of them by a comfortable point difference, while Dell’aquila had to defeat Osmonov (KGZ) bi diqualification, Magomedov (AZE) by 20-10, Gjana (ALB) by 21-1 and Alves (BRA) by the same score to make his way to the Semis. On the other side of the draw, Sawekwiharee, who clinched the bronze medal in Chelyabinsk 2015, got rid of Phabiano (UGA) by disqualification, Torillos (PHI) by 39-20, Sghir (CAN) by 22-5 and Rodriguez (MEX) by 21-13, while Hadipour left Parashar (IND 31-5), Demse (ETH 22-15), Atmanegara (INA) and Laachraoui (BEL) on his way to certify a medal in the category.
Women’s -46 kg

– Napaporn Charanawat (THA)
– Andrea Ramirez (COL)
– Thi Kim Tuyen Truong (VIE)
Sim proved to be stronger than Sabyr (KAZ 16-2), Shyu (TPE 6-4), and Farhani (TUN 15-3) to secure at least a bronze medal for Korea; Charanawat showed her power over Al Halwani (ITA 26-6), Bezerra (BRA 13-3) and Liu (CHN 9-7); Ramirez beat Dixit (IND 8-7), the refugee athlete of the event, Dina Pouryounes Langeroudi (WTF 6-2), Yildirim (TUR 10-9) and Zrihen (ISR); while Truong’s superb performance on monday left Hossen (SYR), Coulibaly (CIV 22-20), Yong (CAN 21-20) and Fazrin (INA 15-13) behind her.
Tomorrow will be the day for the Semi-finals and Finals of these two divisions and for the beginning of the Women’s -49 kg and Men’s -74 kg categories, which will complete their draw until the Semi-final round as it happened today.
