Saint Petersburg 2013 Sportaccord World Combat Games: Preview and Schedule

Day 1 Schedule (Wednesday October 23)


The Taekwondo competition at the Saint Petersburg 2013 Sportaccord World Combat Games will be held between next Wednesday October 23 and Thursday 24 at the «Arena» sport complex of the Russian city.
A total of 8 male teams and 4 female squads will take part in the event, which will follow the WTF competition rules for the TK-5 modality.
TK-5

This format, which was used for the first time in 2010 (Russia at the WTF World Taekwondo Tour) consists on 5-on-5 team matches, where each athlete of the 5-member teams must compete for one minute each before tagging out in the first round. In the subsequent rounds to follow, an athlete must use three offensive moves before they are allowed to tag out with a teammate.
This high energy and fast paced format has crowds on their feet cheering round after round. The format was officially introduced at the 2012 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships in Santa Cruz, Aruba, and eneded up being a great success.
Total weight

Males: The total weight of the 6 athletes combined must not exceed 432 Kg. If a team does not have a substitute player, the total weight of the 5 contestants must not exceed 360 Kg.
Females: The total weight of the 6 athletes combined must not exceed 366 Kg. If a team does not have a substitute player, the total weight of the 5 contestants must not exceed 305 Kg.

History of the event

Second edition of SportAccord World Combat Games
Due to the great success of the first edition of SportAccord World Combat Games in 2010 in Beijing, the second edition of SportAccord World Combat Games will be organised. The event will take place from 18-26 October 2013 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.
SportAccord World Combat Games is an international sporting event which promotes values of self-control, determination and technical mastery, the Martial Arts and Combat Sports integrate elements of culture, wisdom, friendship to create an elite sports competition – the Art of Combat.
The Games will feature 15 Martial Arts and Combat Sports, Aikido, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kendo, Kickboxing, Muaythai, Sambo, Savate, Sumo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Wushu.
Additionally, the Combat Games will feature a Cultural Program reflecting the ancient traditions of martial arts as well as the social and cultural values of the 15 sports and the event as a whole. Topics will deal with the cultural dimensions of the martial arts and their social value and contribution to society.
