G-1 category event
Montreux, Switzerland
Report

Mexico clinched the first position in the medal count of the 4th edition of the Swiss Open by winning 2 gold medals and 3 silvers in the 16 Senior categories completed in Montreux last weekend. France, Great Britain and Serbia did also manage to get 2 golds each, but didn’t accumulate as many points as Mexico in the total point score. France took 1 silver and 2 bronzes, Great Britain 1 silver and Serbia 2 bronzes. The rest of titles were shared by Belgium, Germany, Turky, Italy, Switzerland, Tunisia and Bulgaria.
Mexico took the top of the standing thanks to Isaac Torres and Diana Lara, who became the new champions of the Men’s -68 kg and Women’s -53 kg divisions respectively. Torres defeated the Polish Robak in the big final by a close 9-7, having beaten the Frenc Sarr in the Semis by a comfortable 7-2. The other bronze medallist of the category was the German Konstantinides, who was smashed by Robak in the other Semi 13 to 1. On the other hand, Lara had to wait until the sudden death period to get rid of the other finalist, the German athlete Folgmann (1-0), who had previously defeated the local hope Bezzola 6-5. The other place on the lower step of the podium was taken by Marton (AUS), who couldn’t handle Lara in the other Semi-final (15-9).
The French heroes of the event were Maeva Mellier, champion of the Women’s -73 kg division, and Gwladys Epangue, winner of the +73 kg one. Mellier struggled to beat the German Schneider by 3-2 in the final, leaving the lower step of the division to her compatrio Ble and Ikonen (SWE), while Epangue edged another star of the Heavy category, the Mexican Briseida Acosta, by 5-1 to reach the title. The bronze medallists of the draw ended up being Babic (SRB) and Brandl (GER).
The British most highlighted fighters at Swiss Open were the reigning Olympic champion Jade Jones, who won the Women’s -57 kg division, and Max Carter, who proved to be the strongest in the Men’s -54 kg category. Carter beat the Mexican Rodriguez in an spectacularly offensive final which finished 19-12, with the bronzes being acheived by Akabbouz (NED) and Laachraoui (BEL), while Jones clinched a new gold after getting rid of the Swedish Glasnovic in the extra period of a really close final. The bronze medallists of the category ended up being Ibraghimova (FRA) and Joana Cunha (POR).
Finally, the Serbian team was led by Ana Bajic, who clinched the Women’s -67 kg gold by defeating the Slovenian Franka Anic 3-1, and Milos Gladovic, who reigned in the Men’s -58 kg division after suprisingly beating the Mexican Damian Villa by 6-2 in the final. The Women’s -67 kg bronzes were awarded to Piñeiro (ESP) and Ulfig (POL), while the Men’s -58 kg ones were taken by Tuncat (GER) and Khalil (AUS).
