Kids that fights taekwondo stands a better chance of exceling in academics, Head Coach of FCT Taekwondo, Benjamin Eneh has said.
Mr. Eneh revealed this while speaking with DailyTrust at the 2nd Federal Capital Territory’s kiddies taekwondo Championship held at the Sheraton Hotel in Abuja on Saturday.
“It’s a sport that brings children in harmony with their mind and body by a way of training them to learn how to concentrate”
He added that: “Most of them that have not been doing well in their academics ends up improving because of the increase in their level of concentration.”
Coach Eneh also revealed that: “Taekwondo is a discipline sport. We are facing some problems in Nigeria presently stemming from our inability to give our children proper directions but this is what Taekwondo does.”
“Traditionally, it inculcate discipline into the children. It encompasses the five tenets: modesty, humility, self control, indomitable spirit and perseverance”, he stressed.
The taekwondo coach explained that the aforementioned tenets are traits that build a man of noble character, “and that is what these children are growing up with.”
He said the championship was one of the council’s grassroots sports development programme which was aimed at identifying and nurturing talents for FCT and Nigeria.
“We are actually looking forward to tackling the dwindling of our performance in sports from the grassroots,” Coach Eneh noted.
“By the time we give theses children a projection of six to ten years, we will be able to assemble a new breed of champions that will be able to do Nigeria proud, especially in Teakwondo.”
Kids from twelve schools and clubs in the Federal Capital territory (FCT) challenged for glory at the championship.
The kids who competed in the peewee category of the sport were within zero and fourteen age bracket.
