TAEKWONDOWON, a new name of Taekwondo Park
[TPF Press Release]
A new name has been given to the Taekwondo Park in Muju, Korea
On February 28, the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation(TPF) announced the new name ‘Taekwondowon’ which will replace the former name Taekwondo Park. The Taekwondowon is scheduled to open in 2013 in Muju, Korea, as the hub of taekwondo education, training and international exchanges.
Literally, Taekwondowon stands for the complex where taekwondo related facilities and objects are all gathered to achieve the optimal goal of "One World Through Taekwondo."
The new name also contains the symbolic meaning of ‘Mu-Reung-Do-Won'(Shangri-La) or Utopia.
The former name, Taekwondo Park, was a combination of two common nouns. Consequently, there were critical remarks that the name is not fully representing the image as the center of world taekwondo.
In particular, taekwondo coaches and leaders abroad suggested that the name is not appropriate for a Mecca-like estate of taekwondo, which is going to spread the educational and spiritual value of taekwondo.
To find a more appropriate name for the taekwondo hub, in March of 2011, TPF organized an ad hoc committee comprised of representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), taekwondo organizations such as Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), and the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA) and academic fields as well as a naming expert.
The committee held four meetings in 2011 and finally selected Taekwondowon as the new name of the taekwondo hub.
In that process, with the view of finding a better name, the committee conducted a number of surveys of more than 1,000 taekwondo related persons such as taekwondo practitioners in Korea and abroad, university students majoring in taekwondo, athletes and officials who participated in the Gyeongju World Taekwondo Championships in 2011.
Further, the committee widely collected opinions from taekwondo grand masters in Korea and abroad on this matter.
