The World Taekwondo Hanmadang, to kick-off in Namyangju, Korea
The opening ceremony for the largest annual event hosted by the Kukkiwon, the “World Taekwondo Hanmadang”, will be held in Namyangju city on the 10th of August.
The Namyang Sports and Culture Center will gather in one place 3,700 taekwondo practitioners from 53 countries, which will compete in 11 events and 52 fields until the 13th of August.
Anyone with a Kukkiwon Dan (degree) holding the citizenship or permanent residency status from any of the participating countries can participate in the Hanmadang.
During the four days of the Hanmadang which this year will be held under the slogan “One World Through Taekwondo”, there will be a wide range of events to promote taekwondo, the city of Namyangju and Korean culture through “experience programs”, which will include a photo-zone, face-painting and markets with typical Namyangju food among others.
Some of the featured competitions in this contest are the breaking events, team contests, official and creative poomsae, and taekwondo aerobic. The fist breaking competition is traditionally the most interesting one, and the winner will certainly be in the spotlight.
In this edition there is a higher percentage of international participants and the festival-like atmosphere has been enhanced by differentiating for the first time domestic and international divisions.
The purpose of the Hanmadang is more than just competing to win; it is a festival in which all taekwondo practitioners can participate and enjoy.
For the internationalization of the Hanmadang, the number of awards for the third place has been expanded from 1 to 2 (individual, team).
Also, the Kukkiwon has put its efforts into improving the organization and has sent to the participants detailed explanations of the vocabulary and technical rules for each event.
The opening ceremony will take place on the 10th of August at 4 P.M. and will count with the presence of personalities related to Taekwondo and sports, as well as the Mayor of Namyangju City, Seok-Woo Lee, among other personalities related to the city.
The opening ceremony will start with “Opening the Path to Hope”, which will be performed by the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, followed by demonstrations of the Kukkiwon team and traditional Korean dances.
The Kukkiwon will use the Social Network Services (SNS) for an active promotion of the 2011 Hanmadang overseas, by uploading contest results in Youtube, as well as setting up a digital inbox for sending video messages to the participants overseas.
