The 2012 World University Taekwondo Championship will kick off on the 25th of May in Pocheon, South Korea.
The championship will take place at Daejin University, located at the center of the city of Pocheon, one hour north from Seoul.
The 12th World University Taekwondo Championships are organized by the International University Sports Federation (President Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU), which also organizes the Universiade.
In an invitation letter, President Gallien said, “This event is part of FISUs wonderful program featuring 28 World University Championships in 2012” and that the World University Championships “take place every two years in even-numbered years. They alternate with Summer and Winter Universiades, which are organized in odd-numbered years”, and added that “the championships provide a large number of students, teachers and sports leaders from various backgrounds with a place, in addition to Universiades, to meet and share their experiences and ideas”.
The organizing committee revealed that athletes from 50 countries applied this year for the championship, which is expected to be the largest edition in its history.
According to the organizing committee, there will be 15 European countries, 5 African countries, 8 American countries, 4 Oceanian countries, and 18 Asian countries.
The championship will last 6 days until the 30th of May, and will be divided into Poomsae (25-26th) and Kyorugi (27-30th).[:]
