The triple world champion and Olympic bronze Tae-hun Kim (KOR) added another gold to his large collection after climbing to the top of the podium at the first ever Men’s -58 kg Grand Slam, held today in Wuxi, China. The other title of the day was taken by another world champion: Irem Yaman from Turkey, who proved to be the strongest athlete in the Women’s -57 kg after gettind rid of the division’s superstar Jade Jones (GBR) in her first match.
Kim clinched gold after outscoring his compatriot and team mate Jang by a comfortable 37-16 in the final. The king of the Men’s -58 kg category was always in charge of the fight, managing the pace and always under control of the time. The bronze medal was awarded to Mikhail Artamonov from Russia, who was the best in the repechage for the last step of the podium after defeating the local hope, Wu, by a clear 26-16.
Yaman was crowned as the Grand Slam champion after an extremely tough and close battle against another local idol, Zhou, who didn’t give up until the extra period, which ended 2-0 for the Turkish. Yaman had to prove herself in front of the superstar of the category, the double Olympic champion Jade Jones (GBR), in the first round of the draw, but was able to go through after winning over the Brit by superiority after a tie to 5.
The lower step of the podium was taken by another Chinese representative, Zongshi Luo, who was way better than Ah-reum Lee from Korea in the bronze medal match (33-10).
